US Government Shutdown: Impact on Passport and Visa Services in the GCC, India, and Bangladesh

Dubai: A lapse in government funding has triggered a partial shutdown in the United States, forcing federal agencies — including overseas embassies — to scale back operations. This development has raised concerns among residents in the Gulf, India, and Bangladesh about the continuity of passport and visa services.

Embassy announcements across the region

The US Mission to the UAE confirmed on its official X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts that routine updates would be paused until full operations resume. “Due to the lapse in appropriations, this account will not be updated regularly, except for urgent safety and security information,” the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi announced.

Similar statements were issued by American diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, India, and Bangladesh, indicating a coordinated global response to the funding shortfall.

Will passport and visa services stop?

Despite the funding freeze, most US embassies have assured residents that passport and visa processing will continue as long as resources permit. A joint statement from missions across the Gulf and South Asia confirmed:

“At this time, scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at U.S. Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the lapse in appropriations, as the situation permits.”

This means that while services remain operational for now, applicants are advised to monitor official updates in case further restrictions arise.
